Your Path to Commissioned

Requirements vary by state — most notaries are fully commissioned in 4–6 weeks.

1. Complete Notary Training

Take a state-approved notary course and exam (required in most states). The National Notary Association (NNA) offers guided training in every state.

2. Apply for Your Commission

Submit your application, background check, and fee to your state's commissioning authority (usually the Secretary of State).

3. Get Bonded & Insured

Purchase your required surety bond and recommended E&O insurance to protect yourself and your clients.

4. Order Your Supplies

Get your official seal, journal, and thumbprint pad — then start accepting appointments as a commissioned notary.
